A 30-minute avant-garde performance piece
Under The Gaze has previously been performed at the Delius Art Centre, Bradford, UK (2012), Swindon Literature Festival, UK (2013) and Grassington Festival, UK (2013). This is the only performance in Shanghai and is an opportunity not to be missed.
The event:
An opportunity to observe the model being drawn in a series of poses by experienced artists, also to draw her yourself (bring your own materials) or get inspiration for creative writing while listening to voice-overs of the artists describing their relationships to the model – interspersed with the model’s innermost thoughts (Chinese subtitles).
Is the model vulnerable? Exploited? What is really going on in the life-room when the model is ‘under the gaze’ of the artists?
‘Under the gaze’ makes reference to the 1970s ‘male gaze’ debate initiated by feminist academic Laura Mulvey. It has been performed at arts venues and arts and literature festivals in England where it has been reviewed as ‘like a 1960s “happening”’.
